Harry Henderson—A Ness Boy
Important appointment for Shetland-born Mr Harry Henderson, of Franklin, Michigan, U.S.A., is that of liquor commissioner of Michigan, who started his three-year term at the beginning of this year.
Mr Henderson is the second son of Mr Henry Henderson, of Noss, Dunrossness, and of Jeannie Henderson (nee Malcolmson), who was a daughter of the late Mr Peter Malcolmson, The Park, Sandwick. The family emigrated soon after Harry was born, but his Aunt Martha Malcolmson still lives at Park.
The new commissioner will receive 7500 dollars a year salary. Founder of the Henderson Tyre Coy., president of the George King Coy., and the Henderson Tool Coy., Mr Henderson is now 58 years of age, and is reputed to be a wealthy man. He lives on a five acre estate at Franklin with his wife, and is an ardent horseman.
President of the precint organisation in 1945-46, Henderson was the unsuccessful Republican nominee for Congress in the 15th District in both the 1944 and 1946 elections. He is alleged to have become interested in politics when he shaped his business interests “so I could practically retire.”
A Mason, Henderson is also a member of the Detroit Yacht Club.
Governor Sigler, when announcing Henderson’s appointment, said:
“Henderson is well qualified by his experience as a successful business man, his integrity, and ability to fill this very important position.
He has been active for many years in organised fighting machine control and bossism in Wayne County politics.”
