    • DEATH OF A GOOD SEAMAN

The term "a good seaman" is not lightly bestowed, but Mr Magnus Flaws, aged 65 of Lyttelton, who died last weekend in Christchurch, was one of these.
Born in the Shetlands, Mr Flaws was brought up in Renfrew. He commenced seafaring at an early age. his discharge book reveals service in such noted British companies as Hogarth's, Canadian Pacific, and Shaw Saville and Albion Ltd.
But 35 years ago he came to New Zealand as a member of the crew of the tug Lyttleton II fresh from the shipyard.
Subsequently Mr Flaws served with the Union Steam Ship Company, Ltd, including a considerable period in the Inter-Island steamer-express service.
In 1957 he took employment with the former New Zealand Shipping Company, Ltd. at Lyttleton as a gear storeman. In this role Mr Flaws practised his seaman's craft - rope and wire splicing, canvas work and other intricate, decorative ropework which is today a fading art.
His services were constantly in demand. He had no special hobbies apart from this work.
In 1965 when the New Zealand Stevedoring and Wharfingering Company, Ltd. came into being, he continued working in this firm until his death. According to his employers, this former seaman's talents will be sorely missed.
There was none more skilled in the port.
Mr Flaws is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
